What it's used for

  • Retail and consumer goods brands: monitor competitors' prices, promotions and assortment by chain and country.
  • Economists and analysts: compare the cost of the basic basket between countries in dollars and track food inflation.
  • Purchasing and distribution: find the cheapest chain for the same EAN.
  • Data science: train product matching models and catalog normalization.

How we prepared it

  • 86 basic basket terms were searched in each chain (with regional variants such as gaseosa and refresco, fideos and pasta, lavandina, cloro and lejía, poroto and frijol).
  • Each product was assigned to a basket category based on its name, with rules that exclude derivatives (for example, rice crackers or coffee with sugar do not count as rice or sugar) and departments unrelated to the basket (home appliances, technology, decoration). Search results that did not correspond to the basket were discarded.
  • Only available products: products with no stock and no price were excluded, because they tend to show outdated prices.
  • Deduplicated by chain and SKU; if a SKU has several sellers, the chain's own offer is kept. id is a stable identifier (chain + SKU).
  • EAN validated with GTIN check digit and normalized to 13 digits; invalid codes are left empty.
  • Net content read from the product name (for example "1 L", "500 g", "x6") or from the store's selling unit, normalized to grams or milliliters. For diapers, feminine pads, toilet paper and paper towels, only the number of units is reported.
  • Price per kg or liter = price / total content; for Mercadona the reference price published by the chain is used. 21 values outside the plausible range were nullified.
  • List price: if the store reports a list price lower than the price or more than 5 times higher, the current price is used instead.
  • Conversion to dollars using the reference rates from September 26, 2026: 1 USD = 1,523.97 ARS; 3,256.24 COP; 17.6711 MXN; 3.4076 PEN; 0.8773 EUR.
  • Prices in local currency as published by each online store (they may vary by branch or region).
